For Annice, life as a gifted Bard—able to commune with the magical kigh of all four quarters—has been richly rewarding, though she was forced to surrender her royal birthright to gain it. But her most recent Walk, traveling the country to gather information for the crown, has left her with an unlooked for blessing—and the mortal threat of treason.

Huff creates an egalitarian world where sexual identity is such a non-issue that the words don't even exist—and then completely ignores the fact and concentrates on working up an entertaining plot, peopling it with delightful characters, and throwing in generous helpings of humor, magic, and music. Very fun, and lighter fare than the other books in the series. She has a tendency to switch point of view too frequently, but otherwise it's a refreshingly vibrant fantasy romp.
