When I started Luck in the Shadows, the brief prologue almost had me putting it down. Cliché villains, mysterious prophetic mumbo-jumbo and various evil deeds that are meant to shock and appall us so that we hate the villains. I flipped to the first chapter, curious if it really was going to be this bad.

And a day later, I seemed to surface from the story again, gasping and hungry for more. Let's just say that, however poorly she may do villains, her main characters, Alec and Seregil are compelling beyond all reason.

Ms. Flewelling has a knack for keeping you on the edge of your seat the whole time and for totally involving you in the story. I spent the entire book shouting at the characters, getting upset at bad news and happy at good parts. By the end, I was exhausted and yet still wanted more. Taking a chance on the other books being as good as this one, I've already bought them.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a lively, entertaining read and who isn't too bothered by certain over-used plot devices and characters.
