The second book is a stepping stone in Vanyel's growth in magic as well as his coping with loss. There is adventure, action, and suspense, as well as some unanswered questions and interesting twists, though it doesn't always deal with the things we'd like it to. More stable in writing quality than Magic's Pawn, this is a nice addition to the trilogy.
