Karis the blacksmith has kicked her bad habit and embraced her power as an earth-witch. Now the land of Shaftal cries out for healing, and the people of Shaftal call for her to become their leader, the G'deon.
But Karis believes she must wait for exactly the right moment. Meanwhile, the occupying Sainnites plant seeds of hate and destruction throughout the country and a group of fanatics rise up to destroy the invaders at any cost.
I enjoyed this sequel to Fire Logic. I thought the characters and setting were richly developed in this novel and I acquired a feel for Shaftal through the eyes of its people. I really liked how the point of view included the invading Sainnites, and the two Sainnite characters were my favorites.
My only complaint was that one of the plot elements made no sense to me. I was completely confused by the interaction of Karis and her lover Zanja. Zanja embarks on a strange journey that seemed pointless to me, but maybe I just didn't get it. Anyway, when I ignored that plot thread, I was left with a wonderfully intense and gripping story I simply couldn't put down.
